Rafina is Athens's second port — smaller and less congested than Piraeus, located on the eastern coast of Attica. Rafina's key advantage: it is only 30km from Athens Airport, compared to Piraeus at approximately 45km. For travellers flying into ATH and continuing to Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, or Santorini by high-speed catamaran, Rafina is typically the faster and more convenient option.

If your flight arrives at Athens Airport and your destination is one of the northern Cyclades, check whether your ferry departs from Rafina before assuming Piraeus. We advise on this routinely — ATH → Rafina is one of our most frequent bookings.

Price Table

* Athens traffic significantly affects city–port journey times. Rafina–airport route is less affected by city traffic.

Piraeus or Rafina? Which Athens Port Do You Need?

One of the most frequent questions from travellers connecting through Athens to the Greek islands: which port? The answer depends on your destination island and where you're travelling from..

Piraeus serves the majority of Cycladic routes — Milos, Sifnos, Serifos, Folegandros, Ios, Santorini (conventional ferry), and the Dodecanese. It is approximately 10km from Athens city centre. From ATH Airport, allow at least 60 minutes during peak hours.

Rafina serves Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, and Santorini via high-speed catamarans — and it is only 30km from the airport. If you're flying into ATH and catching a fast ferry to one of these islands, Rafina saves both time and cost compared to going via Piraeus.

At HappyMove, we pre-book both port transfers daily. Tell us your ferry operator, departure time, and gate — we'll plan the timing and ensure you arrive with enough buffer for port check-in, whatever the traffic.

If flying into ATH Airport, Rafina is usually the best option — it’s only 30km from the airport and high-speed ferries reach Mykonos in approximately 2.5 hours. Ferries also depart from Piraeus but the airport-to-Piraeus journey is longer. We can advise based on your specific ferry booking.

Approximately 45 minutes in normal traffic — up to 60–75 minutes during peak hours. Pre-book your transfer and specify your ferry departure time so we allow sufficient time.

Approximately 30 minutes — significantly faster than Piraeus as Rafina is on the eastern side of Attica, close to the airport. Less affected by city-centre traffic.

Yes — we meet cruise ship passengers at the Piraeus Cruise Terminal. Please specify your ship name and terminal when booking. The cruise terminal is separate from the ferry gates.

Pre-booking is strongly recommended. Athens traffic is unpredictable and the distances involved mean last-minute availability cannot be guaranteed — particularly for ferry connection timing where missing the boat has real consequences.

SeaJets and Golden Star Ferries operate high-speed services from Rafina to Paros and Naxos in summer. Journey times: approximately 2.5–3 hours to Paros, 3–4 hours to Naxos. We handle ATH → Rafina transfers for these connections regularly.
